Oh my, today was a busy day for us! Our day started like it always does-with our class morning meeting! We sit in a big oval on the floor and spend some time connecting as a class family. Today we had some special items shared by students! Then we talked about apples....Yup, apples. I put this picture of 8 apples on the board.
I had the kids share ways in which these apples are different from each other. They shared observations about the colors, the shades of the same colors, the shapes, and sizes. Then I switched to this picture of the same 8 apples...
We observed that when we look at the insides of the apples, without their skins, that they all look the same. We can't tell which piece came from which apple. We talked about how the apples are like us...some of us are different colors, some of us are light, some of us are dark, some of us are big, some of us are smaller....we all look different on the outside. But on the inside, we're all the same. We have the same feelings and hurt the same when those feelings are hurt.
Then we talked about how, like the pieces of apples thrown together in the bowl, we've been thrown together in the same class. When we add a little bit of patience, respect, kind words, trust, and self-control, we can make something pretty special in our class--just like when we add some cinnamon, brown sugar, and water to the apples.
At the end of the day, we ended up with some pretty tasty apple sauce to try! I can't wait to see how our class ends up this year!

In addition to our yummy apple sauce, we also had our first counseling lesson with Mrs. Surovick! She taught us about big problems (problems that make us feel afraid) and little problems (problems that make us feel angry or sad). We are going to be going to her lessons every two weeks for much of the fall!
As if that wasn't enough for a Monday, we also had our Boosterthon Kick Off Pep Rally! The theme this year is Backyard Box Office! Tomorrow we will recap the pep rally and on Wednesday we will start the character education lessons that are part of the program! The kids always enjoy these lessons and are already pumped about the fun run next Friday!
Kids brought home their pledge books today with their Monday papers. Directions on how to register for the fun run is included. Every kid that registers gets a prize! This week we will also be setting up our class pledge-o-meter to track our class pledges and earn some fun rewards!
