Today was our field trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Todd Mission! This was our first year to bring kiddos to one of their school days. It was hot. It was crowded. But it was pretty cool too! Here are some of my pictures from the day, as well as some photos from parent chaperones! A HUGE shout out to the parents that came and helped with this! It would have been IMPOSSIBLE without your help!!

In Social Studies this week, we have been learning about First Responders who help keep our community safe! Today we were able to have two come talk to the classes! Sergeant Chad Hanks from Bryan PD came with his K-9 partner and Firefighter Cade Wilson from CSFD Station 3 came! The kids had a ton of questions and loved getting to see the K-9 in action! I realized today as I reviewed the post about Boosterthon that I completely forgot to post pictures of our parent volunteers! Boosterthon wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of our PTO and parents who could help out! So THANK YOU!
Today was our Boosterthon Fun Run and boy was it fun!!! Our class raised $34.14 per lap, and everyone ran at least 35 laps! This was the first time to use my selfie stick, too, and that was also so much fun!! Hope you enjoy the pictures! Aftwr working up a sweat, we cooled off with lunch in the room, a movie (Aladdin!), and a special surprise....SNO-CONES!!! Special shout out to Mrs. Adams, for convincing a friend to donate the use of the machine and the syrup! Yummo!!
Oh my, today was a busy day for us! Our day started like it always does-with our class morning meeting! We sit in a big oval on the floor and spend some time connecting as a class family. Today we had some special items shared by students! Then we talked about apples....Yup, apples. I put this picture of 8 apples on the board. I had the kids share ways in which these apples are different from each other. They shared observations about the colors, the shades of the same colors, the shapes, and sizes. Then I switched to this picture of the same 8 apples... We observed that when we look at the insides of the apples, without their skins, that they all look the same. We can't tell which piece came from which apple. We talked about how the apples are like us...some of us are different colors, some of us are light, some of us are dark, some of us are big, some of us are smaller....we all look different on the outside. But on the inside, we're all the same. We have the same feelings and hurt the same when those feelings are hurt. Then we talked about how, like the pieces of apples thrown together in the bowl, we've been thrown together in the same class. When we add a little bit of patience, respect, kind words, trust, and self-control, we can make something pretty special in our class--just like when we add some cinnamon, brown sugar, and water to the apples. At the end of the day, we ended up with some pretty tasty apple sauce to try! I can't wait to see how our class ends up this year! In addition to our yummy apple sauce, we also had our first counseling lesson with Mrs. Surovick! She taught us about big problems (problems that make us feel afraid) and little problems (problems that make us feel angry or sad). We are going to be going to her lessons every two weeks for much of the fall! As if that wasn't enough for a Monday, we also had our Boosterthon Kick Off Pep Rally! The theme this year is Backyard Box Office! Tomorrow we will recap the pep rally and on Wednesday we will start the character education lessons that are part of the program! The kids always enjoy these lessons and are already pumped about the fun run next Friday! Kids brought home their pledge books today with their Monday papers. Directions on how to register for the fun run is included. Every kid that registers gets a prize! This week we will also be setting up our class pledge-o-meter to track our class pledges and earn some fun rewards!
Today was our first real math test of the year! It covered place value, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, and rounding to the nearest tens/hundreds. Look at these mathematicians hard at work!
We are off to a great start in Room 304! We have spent the first 5 weeks of the school year building our classroom community, getting to know each other, and learning about the work required to be successful in 3rd grade...oh, and a little math, science, and social studies too! Here are some pictures of what we've been doing! We are just getting started with learning this year! I expect the next 30 or so weeks to be just as fun, challenging, and exhausting as these first 5 have been! :)
Friday, May 19th, we celebrated our Biz Movie project by hosting Creek View's First Annual Film Festival! The kiddos worked so hard on their companies and movies, learning great things along the way! I hope you enjoy watching them below!
We had a BLAST at Swamp Day today! I know I haven't posted in forever...It always amazes me just how busy I get in the middle of the school year! I did want to make sure to share these pictures out though because we had a great time! If you see Coach Ritchie or Coach Gracia, make sure to thank them for their hard work in organizing and planning this! We started at Corn Hole Toss! Next was the Water Bucket Sponge Relay! Our third stop was at Spray Bottle Water Tag and our fourth was Tinikling! Then we had Tricycle Races (with help getting started from our friends)! Our 7th station was Sack Races! Then Tug of War! I didn't get many pictures here because I jumped on the rope and was tugging too! :) After Tug of War, we did the Long Jump station. I didn't get a single picture of that one! Oops! Then we headed over to Egg Races with the biggest eggs and spoons I've ever seen! After struggling to keep the eggs in place (the wind kept gusting them off), the kids were allowed to just hold it and run! Next up with the 40 meter run! We lined up boys versus girls. We have one more boy than girl, so I had to step in! That's why so few pics! :) Our last two stops were Soccer Lawn Bowling and the Scooter Racetrack! By the end of Swamp Day, we were hot, sweaty, and tired! But we sure did have a good time! Monday starts the 6th six weeks of the school year (which is really 7 weeks long). 35 school days to go, and they'll be 4th graders! How did that happen so fast?!?!?
So I'm sure you all have noticed that I've fallen a bit behind on updating the weekly newsletter/blog. And I bet you've all been asking if I was ever going to get back to it! Well, let me tell you, we had SO much going on in October that the entire month just flew by! Here is my attempt at catching up and letting you all see what we've been up to! Boosterthon!September ended with a super-fun pep rally to kick off this year's Boosterthon Fundraiser! The theme for Boosterthon this year was "Big World Recess!" During the pep rally, Mr. Durand challenged the students to raise more than $40,000 this year, topping last year's funds. If we did, the students would get to duct tape Mr. Durand to the cafeteria wall (no worries...we exceeded our school goal of $40,000 and the duct tape pictures will come soon....)! After two weeks of fundraising and learning about how to play with character, it was finally time for our Boosterthon Fun Run on Friday, October 9th! Counseling Lessons with Mrs. SurovickWe had two lessons with Mrs. Surovick in October. The first lesson was about Small Problems & Big Problems. A small problem is a problem that the students have the power to handle! Mrs. Surovick reminded us of the many different things we can do when we encounter a small problem. These are called Kelso's Choices, and the students have a copy of the 9 choices on the back cover of their Gator Binders! Our second counseling lesson with Mrs. Surovick was about self-control! Mrs. Surovick reminded us that self-control has to be practiced over and over and over again! During this lesson, Mrs. Surovick threw a bunch of balloons around the room, and the students had to practice self-control by not reaching out to hit or touch the balloons! It was SO tempting...but we all managed to keep control! Science Activities! One science topic we covered in October is the difference between mixtures and solutions. A mixture is a type of solution that can be separated, whereas a solution is one that cannot be separated. The kids were given a cup of cereals and had to determine if it was a mixture or a solution by trying to separate the different pieces. The kids quickly learned that the cereal could be separated and was therefore a mixture! We also discussed how each individual piece of cereal was an example of a solution, since we couldn't separate out the flour, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients. We also had a Mobile Dairy Classroom from SouthWest Dairy Farmers come to Creek View and teach us about cows and milk! We learned about the cow's four stomachs, how a cow is milked, and why milk is important for our bodies! Another science topic we explored was Forms of Energy! We explored light energy, mechanical energy, thermal (or heat) energy, sound energy, and solar energy through lab rotations! Unfortunately, I was unable to get a picture of our solar energy experiment, as it has been very cloudy and rainy this month! Hopefully the students brought their UV beads home and they've been able to take them outside on a sunny day to see them change color! Fun with Duct Tape!As promised earlier, here are pictures of the kids duct-taping Mr. Durand to the cafeteria wall! Each student was given a piece of duct tape to add to Mr. Durand. He was secured with over 500 pieces of duct tape by the end of the day! Dot Plots! In addition to bar graphs and pictographs, students in 3rd grade now learn about dot plots. Say what?? I know...but the kids did great with them! To learn about dot plots, we decided to make our own! Each student received a scoop of Froot Loop cereal, which they had to separate by color, count and record the numbers of each color on a frequency table, and then create a dot plot based on the frequency table! I Spy Camp!Last, but certainly not least, we ended the month with our annual 3rd grade I Spy Great Thinkers camp! This "camp" helps students make the connection between reading strategies and math problem solving. It shows the kids that the same strategies they use in reading (such as making connections, making inferences, or asking questions) can help them when they are problem-solving in math! The kids had the opportunity to rotate to each of the six 3rd grade teachers, wear full spy gear, earn spy certificates, and celebrate their spy training at the end of the week! Whew! October was exhausting but fun! We did lots of learning, lots of running, and lots of laughing! Will November be just as busy? Probably! :)
